Cannabis wellness has a credibility problem, and most of it is self-inflicted. Claims outrun evidence, and customers are left to guess.
We built our Scientific Advisory Council to close that gap. Our advisors review the educational content we publish — independently, and on the record. Their names are here, their credentials are verifiable, and their published work is linked.
Dr. Riley Kirk, Ph.D.
Cannabis research scientist · Natural product chemistry
Dr. Kirk holds a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences specializing in natural product chemistry, where she studied the traditional and contemporary uses of hundreds of medicinal plants. She has worked as an immunology scientist in the biotech industry and researches the chemical complexity of cannabis.
She is Assistant Adjunct Professor at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, and a Lecturer at Vermont State University, where she teaches Cannabis as Medicine — an introduction to the chemistry and pharmacology of cannabis.
Dr. Kirk is co-founder of the Network of Applied Pharmacognosy, a non-profit using science as advocacy to research and communicate the unique power of natural products, and hosts Bioactive, an educational podcast on the chemistry and pharmacology of natural products. She is the author of Reefer Wellness: Understanding Cannabis Science, Culture, and Medicine.
Her work focuses on connecting the cannabis industry, academia and consumers to extend the reach of cannabis research and education.
Dr. John Heineman, M.D., M.P.H.
Board-certified plastic surgeon · Hand and upper extremity
Dr. Heineman is lead author of "A Randomized Controlled Trial of Topical Cannabidiol for the Treatment of Thumb Basal Joint Arthritis", published in the Journal of Hand Surgery — one of the few controlled trials of topical CBD in the peer-reviewed literature.
He is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity disorders and injuries, and completed a combined orthopedic and plastic surgery hand fellowship at the University of Washington, training at Harborview Medical Center and Seattle Children's Hospital.
Dr. Heineman earned his master's degree in public health at Harvard University, with a thesis examining hand replantation versus transplantation outcomes. He attended medical school at Oregon Health & Science University, where he served as class president, completed a general surgery residency at the University of Iowa, and a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of Virginia. He has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles, presented at regional and national conferences, and received grants and best paper awards.
An Iowa native from Grinnell, he was drawn to medicine while volunteering at the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic — and swam across the English Channel to raise money for it. He has since raced the Boston Marathon, the Hawaii Ironman, the Leadville Trail 100 and the American Birkebeiner. He lives with his wife, two sons and their dog.
