Dr. Riley Kirk is a cannabis research scientist and a cannabis educator. She obtained her Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences, specializing in natural product chemistry, where she studied the traditional and contemporary uses of hundreds of medicinal plants. She has worked as an immunology scientist in the biotech industry, is currently an assistant associate professor at the University of Rhode Island, and works in the cannabis industry studying the chemical complexity of cannabis.
Riley is the co-founder of the non-profit organization the Network of Applied Pharmacognosy (NAP). NAP is using science as advocacy to research and communicate findings that highlight the unique power of natural products. The goal of Riley’s work is to forge connections throughout the Cannabis industry, academia, and consumers to further the reach of Cannabis research and education.
Riley is passionate about making Cannabis science accessible through social media channels and hosts an educational podcast called Bioactivewhich disseminates the chemistry and pharmacology of natural products.
Dr. John Heineman is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in treatment of hand and upper extremity disorders and injuries. He completed a combined orthopedic and plastic surgery hand fellowship at the University of Washington, with training at Harborview Medical Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Heineman is a proud Iowa native from Grinnell. He attended the University of Iowa for college, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with honors in biology and political science. He was inspired to go into medicine after volunteering at the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic, and he swam across the English Channel as a fundraiser to support the clinic’s mission of service.
Dr. Heineman attended medical school at Oregon Health & Science University, where he served as class president. He obtained a master’s degree in public health at Harvard University, with his thesis examining hand replantation versus transplantation outcomes. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Iowa, followed by a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of Virginia. Throughout his training, he has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles, presented at regional and national conferences, and received grants and best paper awards.
Dr. Heinemann has been researching various uses of topical CBD and is the lead author of “A Randomized Controlled Trial of Topical Cannabidiol for the Treatment of Thumb Basal Joint Arthritis”.
Dr. Heineman values time spent with his wife, two sons, and dog. He enjoys being outside and has raced the Boston Marathon, Hawaii Ironman, Leadville Trail 100, and American Birkebeiner.
